Recently, the news in New York has been filled with stories of a young couple and their unborn child that was tragically killed in Brooklyn by a hit-and-run driver. Police have located the man they believe was driving the car that hit the cab they were riding in that day. The man has now been indicted by a grand jury in Brooklyn with crimes connected to this horrific car accident.
The charges in the indictment may not be the last charges filed against the suspect. The Brooklyn prosecutor’s office says more charges may be filed as the investigation continues. The young couple had hired the cab to take them to the hospital on the day the accident occurred.
The suspect is said to have driving upwards of 60 mph down the street in Brooklyn where the accident occurred. The young couple was killed as a result of the injuries they sustained in the accident. A cesarean section was performed on the young mother-to-be. The baby survived the crash and the emergency birth, but died the next day despite the efforts of medical personnel.
This young family was ripped away from everyone who knew them and their absence may be felt for a long time. No amount of money could ever replace them or make up for their untimely deaths, but filing a wrongful death action may give the family a sense of peace that they were able to seek justice on behalf of their loved ones. If they are able to demonstrate to a New York court that the driver responsible for the car accident was negligent and caused or contributed to their deaths, the court may award them the costs and damages they have sustained as the result of their loss.
