Car accident in New York thruway kills biker, passenger

A deadly crash in Orange County in early June has left two people dead and led to the arrest of another driver, according to police. The car accident happened early on a Sunday morning on the New York State Thruway. The accident is still under investigation but one man has been charged in connection with the crash.

Preliminary reports suggest the two victims, a 23-year-old man and his 25-year-old passenger, were traveling north on their motorcycle when their vehicle was struck by another vehicle traveling the same direction. In the ensuing crash, both individuals suffered fatal injuries. They were pronounced dead at the scene by arriving emergency personnel.

The driver of the other vehicle, who has not been publicly identified by police as of this writing, was arrested on site. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and two counts of vehicular homicide. There is no word whether he is free on bail, and as of this writing, no court date has yet been set in relation to these charges.

This tragic car accident could easily have been avoided if it proves true that the accused driver chose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. Whether this man will be convicted of these charges remains to be seen, but regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, the surviving family of the two deceased motorcyclists will be entitled to seek remuneration in the form of a wrongful death suit. Such a suit, if it is undertaken, will be overseen in a New York civil court and is based upon allegations of negligent conduct said to have caused or contributed to the fatalities suffered.
