2 dead in Queens following New York car accident

A driver who lost control of his vehicle is in police custody following a fatal crash in Queens, according to local law enforcement. New York police arrested the man following a car accident that killed two male pedestrians. Police are still investigating the crash, but charges will likely be filed against the driver in association with this case.

According to reports, the 22-year-old driver was traveling at an unspecified speed above the posted limit when he lost control of his vehicle. The car struck a phone booth and several parked cars before striking two men who had been walking on the sidewalk. The men, apparently construction workers, were 59 and 41 respectively.

Both men were reported dead at the scene by medical first responders. The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital for treatment for minor injuries before being taken into police custody. It is unclear whether he has been formally charged at this time, or if he is still in police custody as of this writing. A New York police investigation is ongoing.

If the preliminary reports are accurate, and the 22-year-old was driving in an unsafe manner when the car accident occurred, he could be held criminally liable for the deaths of the two pedestrians. Any criminal charges of which the man is convicted could be offered in evidence to support any wrongful death lawsuit the next of kin of the deceased victims may choose to file. These suits would be handled separately from a criminal case, in a civil court setting. If liability is established, the court will proceed to adjudicate claims for reimbursement of financial damages sustained.
