Tragedy struck in Queens on the night of April 4 when a vehicle carrying several passengers flipped into a creek. The car accident claimed the life of four people and injured at least one other, according to the New York City Police Department. The accident is still under investigation, and it is unclear if the driver has been charged with a crime at this juncture.
Police reports indicate that the vehicle was traveling west when the driver apparently hit a curb and flipped off the road, landing in a nearby creek. Emergency response personnel dispatched divers into the creek to attempt to free those trapped inside the vehicle. Three of the four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth was taken to a local hospital but later died.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, was not seriously injured but was taken to a local hospital regardless. He was listed as being in stable condition. Police have not yet commented publicly on what they believe happened to cause this tragic accident. They did not release the names of the victims involved in the crash in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
A car accident of this type could be caused by several factors. Depending on which factors New York police determine contributed directly to the tragedy, the driver may end up facing criminal charges. Families of the deceased victims may also choose to file wrongful death suits against the driver (as well as anyone else who owned the car he was driving), which may make use of any criminal convictions ultimately secured as further proof of financial liability in a civil court environment.
