New York car accident kills 2 in Highland

A man and a woman are dead following a tragic accident on Route 9W on the morning of March 29, according to local sources. New York State authorities have not yet released the identity of the two individuals, aged 50 and 51 respectively, who were killed when their vehicles collided. The car accident is still under investigation by local and state law enforcement, and police are urging anyone with information to contact their local sheriff’s office.

Early reports indicate that the two were driving in opposite directions along Route 9W around 7 a.m. when the accident occurred. For reasons unknown, the two vehicles collided head-on. It is unclear whether one or both of the drivers crossed the center line prior to this accident. Thankfully, each was the only individual in their respective vehicles at the time.

A male driver was pronounced dead at the scene by a county medical examiner arriving at the accident site, while the other driver — a female — was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. She was pronounced dead later that day. Police closed the road for roughly five hours to facilitate their investigation, and they have not speculated as to whether alcohol or unsafe driving were factors in the crash.

As the investigation progresses, it is hoped New York authorities will be able to determine how and why the car accident occurred. If it is determined that the actions of one of the two drivers directly contributed to causing the accident, the family of the other driver may wish to file a wrongful death suit against the other driver’s estate. Such a suit is civil in nature and would require some degree of provable evidence documenting that driver failed to abide by the rules of the road in order for the family to be awarded any kind of damages.
