3-car accident kills 1, injures 4 in New York

A Rome woman has been charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter after a fatal 3-car crash claimed one life and sent four other people to the hospital. New York authorities arrested the woman following the July 18 car accident on Route 14 in Milo. The woman was to be arraigned following treatment for the minor injuries she received in the crash.

According to the accident report, the woman failed to negotiate a curve in the road, causing her vehicle to cross over a grassy area and enter Route 14 going southbound in the northbound lanes. Her vehicle struck another car head-on, then struck a second vehicle before coming to rest. The drivers of the two other cars, as well as several passengers, were injured in the crash and taken to local hospitals.

The crash also killed a 55-year-old woman, though it was unclear in this report whether the woman died at the scene or later at a hospital. The driver deemed responsible for the crash was charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter, and was set to be released into police custody after being checked out of the hospital. The specifics of the crash are still under investigation and evidence for an upcoming court date is being gathered.

If New York authorities prove the woman was drunk behind the wheel at the time of the car accident, the criminal penalties she will incur will likely be severe. Regardless, the family of the deceased woman — as well as the injured parties involved in the accident — will be entitled to file civil suits for wrongful death and personal injury, respectively. Evidence from the criminal case may be offered as evidence to support these civil suits.
