New York teen suffers brain injury in accident

A Long Island teen is in critical care following a serious car accident on June 23, local sources have reported. The New York teen has reportedly suffered a brain injury after being involved in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. Currently, no charges have been filed, but the vehicle involved has been impounded ahead of a safety check and police are still investigating the particulars of the crash.

According to the accident report, a 21-year-old man was driving near Lake Ronkonkoma when the accident occurred. For reasons unknown, the man lost control of his vehicle, which struck the center median before careening off onto the right shoulder, eventually striking the guardrail on the right side of the Expressway. The driver and the front seat passenger, who was not identified, were treated at a local hospital and released.

The rear passenger, a 17-year-old boy, did not fare so well. His injuries included a brain injury, and he was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital in serious condition.  His current status is unknown, though it is hoped that he will survive the ordeal.

Even if he does, however, a brain injury can have life-altering consequences for a survivor. Even if New York police do not find sufficient reason to charge the driver with a crime, the family of the injured boy may wish to file a personal injury suit against him given the severity of the injury suffered by the young man. Such a suit would be handled in a civil court rather than as a function of the criminal justice system.
