Car accident in New York leads to arrest

Police have reported that two men lost their lives in Cypress Hills following a serious accident. New York authorities have confirmed that a hit-and-run car accident directly led to the deaths of a 41-year-old and a 56-year-old. They have arrested the Brooklyn resident they believe to be responsible for the accident. He now faces several charges.

Police say the two victims were walking through an intersection just after midnight on Aug. 1 when the accident occurred. Apparently a 21-year-old man was speeding eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle. The car struck both pedestrians after striking two parked cars. The driver fled the scene on foot, as evidenced by surveillance tapes.

The younger victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the older one was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. He too later succumbed to those injuries. The driver has been charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle as well as leaving the scene of an accident. He was arraigned and was being held on $300,000 bail before an Aug. 6 court date.

It is possible the man will be found guilty of the charges filed against him, in which case he will face criminal sentencing. Even if the charges are somehow dropped, however, the families of the men killed in the car accident are entitled under New York law to file wrongful death lawsuits against him. These claims may rely upon evidence from the police investigation to seek compensation for damages in a civil court setting.
